Little ghouls and goblins will be filling the streets next Friday, and the City of North Battleford’s protective services are reminding the public to be cautious on Halloween night.
Director Lindsay Holm explained there are many precautions children, parents and motorists can take to ensure safety while participating in Halloween fun.
“One of the things that the fire department recommends is to make sure that children are dressed warmly and appropriately for the weather in flame-resistant costumes. We also want to make sure that when they are trick-or-treating that they’re traveling on sidewalks and that they are using crosswalks to cross the street,” said Holm.
Choosing brightly colored costumes or adding reflective tape can help kids stand out to drivers at night.
“I’d make sure that they’re trick-or-treating at houses that have exterior lights on and have good visibility in the yard. I’d recommend that parents carry a flashlight or have glow sticks attached to the kids with their costumes to make them a little bit more visible if they are trick-or-treating after the sun’s gone down,” said Holm.
North Battleford’s Fire Department urges parents to sort through their child’s candy to ensure it isn’t tampered with, and it’s safe.
CAA Saskatchewan asks motorists to avoid driving during peak trick-or-treating hours, but if they do, eliminate distractions, remain cautious, and follow traffic signs. CAA also reminds children to travel in groups, so they are easily spotted by motorists.
North Battleford community safety officers and fire department personnel will be out on their ‘Pumpkin Patrol’ Halloween night. A fire truck and a few CSO units will be patrolling to make sure everyone is having a safe experience trick-or-treating.
There are a few Halloween events taking place in the Battlefords area including a masquerade at the Western Development Museum this Saturday. As well as Battleford’s District Food and Resource Centre’s 3rd annual Scare Away Hunger Haunted House on Friday and Saturday.
